Sources & Standards

Canada Perspective is committed to transparency about how we gather, verify, and present information. This page details the sources, standards, and procedures that underpin our journalism, and identifies the people and corporate entity—Northern Beacon Media Inc., an Ontario corporation—responsible for upholding them.

Who is responsible for the accuracy and integrity of our reporting?

The Editor-in-Chief, Catherine Roy, is ultimately responsible for editorial standards, publication decisions, and corrections at Canada Perspective. She oversees a team that includes Andrew Leblanc as Standards & Fact-Checking Lead, who ensures every article is fact-checked using primary sources before publication.

Canada Perspective is owned and operated by Northern Beacon Media Inc., an Ontario corporation (Ontario Business Registry number 1003194827) with its registered office at Unit 12, 95 King Street East, Toronto, ON M5C 1G4. The entire editorial chain—from commissioning by Managing Editor Marc Tremblay to final approval by Catherine Roy—is accountable to readers. All published content is the product of named writers, editors, and fact-checkers. For more on our editorial structure, see Our Team and Editorial Policy.

What official and primary sources do we rely on?

Our reporting is anchored in official and primary sources such as CBC News, Statistics Canada, Elections Canada, the Bank of Canada, and Corporations Canada. These institutions provide verified, authoritative data and reporting that we use as a foundation for our own journalism.

  • CBC News – Canada’s national public broadcaster, a key source for breaking news and investigative journalism.
  • Statistics Canada – The federal agency that produces official statistics on the economy, society, and population.
  • Elections Canada – The independent, non-partisan body that administers federal elections and publishes electoral data.
  • Bank of Canada – The central bank that provides monetary policy analysis, economic forecasts, and financial system data.
  • Corporations Canada – The federal registry that maintains official corporate records, including those of Northern Beacon Media Inc.

When covering provincial or municipal topics, we also rely on equivalent official sources, such as provincial statistical agencies, local government websites, and court records. All primary sources are cited in articles whenever possible.

Which regulatory and standards bodies guide our work?

We adhere to the guidelines and best practices set by the Office of the Privacy Commissioner of Canada, the Canadian Association of Broadcasters, and Ad Standards Canada. These bodies help ensure our journalism respects privacy, ethical broadcasting standards, and truthful advertising practices.

These references do not imply formal accreditation but reflect our commitment to aligning with recognized Canadian norms for responsible publishing. Our own editorial policies, including Advertising & Affiliate Disclosure, are designed to meet or exceed these standards.

What sources and methods do we rely on day to day?

Our daily reporting draws on government press releases, official documents, court records, academic research, expert interviews, and direct observation by our named reporters. Every piece is reviewed by an editor and fact-checked before publication, and no article is published without human approval.

We may use AI-assisted tools for research, drafting, formatting, translation, metadata, or generating headline options, but these tools never replace human editorial judgement. All quotes, sources, and factual claims are verified by a person. Our AI & Automation Policy details the specific safeguards in place. Fact-checking is led by Andrew Leblanc, who also oversees corrections; see our Fact-Checking Policy for the full methodology.

Journalists at Canada Perspective are expected to contact at least two independent sources for any claim that is not based on a primary document. When covering contentious issues, we seek responses from all relevant parties. We also maintain a style guide that prioritises clarity, context, and avoidance of loaded language.

How can you challenge our reporting?

If you believe an error has been published, you can submit a correction request by emailing corrections@canadaperspective.org or using our complaints procedure at Complaints Procedure. Our Standards & Fact-Checking Lead, Andrew Leblanc, investigates all claims promptly and transparently.

We aim to acknowledge receipt of a complaint within two business days and to resolve it within ten business days. If the complaint involves a factual error, we will correct the article and publish a notice. For other concerns—such as bias, missing context, or ethical lapses—we will review the matter with the Managing Editor and, if warranted, issue a clarification or a formal note. Details of our process are available in our Corrections Policy. Readers may also contact Catherine Roy directly at catherine.roy@canadaperspective.org for any unresolved issues.
