Copyright & Takedown Policy

Canada Perspective (canadaperspective.org) respects the intellectual property rights of creators and complies with applicable Canadian copyright law. This Copyright & Takedown Policy explains how rights holders can request the removal of infringing material published on our site. All takedown requests must be submitted in writing to our designated copyright agent at copyright@canadaperspective.org. This policy is part of our commitment to lawful, ethical journalism and is governed by our Terms of Use.

Who is responsible for copyright compliance at Canada Perspective?

Northern Beacon Media Inc., the Ontario corporation that owns and operates Canada Perspective, is responsible for copyright compliance. The company’s registered office is at Unit 12, 95 King Street East, Toronto, ON M5C 1G4. Editorial oversight of all content, including copyright matters, rests with Editor-in-Chief Catherine Roy. Takedown requests are processed by Andrew Leblanc, Standards & Fact-Checking Lead, who coordinates with our legal team to ensure proper handling under Canadian law.

What content does this policy cover?

This policy covers all editorial content published on canadaperspective.org, including articles, photographs, illustrations, graphics, videos, audio recordings, and any other copyrighted material. It also applies to user-generated content submitted through our contact forms, tips line, or other submission channels. Our Editorial Policy outlines the standards for original reporting and sourcing that govern all published work.

How do I submit a takedown request?

To submit a valid takedown request, you must send an email to copyright@canadaperspective.org with the subject line “Takedown Request.” Your email must include: (1) your full legal name and contact information (address, phone number, email); (2) a detailed description of the copyrighted work you believe has been infringed; (3) the exact URL or location of the allegedly infringing material on our site; (4) a statement that you have a good-faith belief the use is not authorized by the copyright owner, its agent, or the law; and (5) a statement, made under penalty of perjury, that the information in your notice is accurate and that you are the copyright owner or authorized to act on their behalf. Incomplete requests may delay processing.

What happens after I submit a request?

Upon receiving a complete takedown request, Andrew Leblanc or a designated team member will acknowledge receipt within two business days. We will review the request against Canadian copyright law, including the fair dealing provisions of the Copyright Act. If the request is valid, we will remove or disable access to the material promptly and notify the affected party. If the request is unclear or appears to lack merit, we may seek clarification or deny the request. We maintain a record of all takedown requests for compliance purposes.

What about counter-notices from content providers?

If you believe material you provided was removed in error or due to misidentification, you may submit a counter-notice to copyright@canadaperspective.org. Your counter-notice must include your name, contact information, identification of the removed material and its location before removal, and a statement under penalty of perjury that you have a good-faith belief the material was removed as a result of mistake or misidentification. We will forward valid counter-notices to the original complainant and may restore the material after 10 business days unless the complainant files a court action.

How does Canada Perspective handle image rights?

We license images from reputable stock agencies, use original photography by our staff, or obtain permission from rights holders. Every image published on our site is sourced and credited in accordance with our Fact-Checking Policy. If you believe an image on our site infringes your copyright, please follow the takedown procedure above. We take image rights seriously and will act promptly on verified claims.

What is the role of AI in content creation and copyright?

AI-assisted tools may support research, drafting, or formatting, but all published content is reviewed and approved by a human editor. Our AI & Automation Policy explicitly prohibits AI from fabricating quotes, sources, or bylines. Any AI-generated elements are subject to the same copyright standards as human-created content. We do not claim copyright over AI-generated material that lacks sufficient human authorship under Canadian law.

How do I contact the copyright team?
