Check the live forecast above for current space weather conditions; the U.S.-based Space Weather Prediction Center issues alerts that help Canadian utilities, airlines, and aurora watchers prepare for geomagnetic storms and solar flares.

What does the Space Weather Prediction Center do?

The NOAA Space Weather Prediction Center (SWPC) monitors the sun and near-Earth space environment, issuing watches, warnings, and alerts for solar activity that can disrupt satellite communications, power grids, and navigation systems. It also produces the official aurora forecast that many Canadians use to plan viewing nights across northern and prairie regions.

How does space weather affect Canada?

Canada’s high-latitude position makes it especially vulnerable to geomagnetic storms—our power grids in Quebec and the Prairies have experienced blackouts during severe events. Airlines reroute polar flights when solar radiation storms are forecast, and GPS reliability can dip. The SWPC’s space weather prediction center aurora forecast is also a key tool for tourism operators in Yellowknife and Churchill.

Where can I find a space weather live update?

The live forecast above gives you current conditions. For deeper detail, visit the NOAA SWPC website or check Environment Canada’s space weather page. Many Canadian apps also display the KP index in real time.

How often are aurora forecasts updated?

The NOAA SWPC aurora forecast updates every hour, with a 3-day outlook refreshed twice daily. For northern Canada, watching the KP index above 5 during local evening hours improves your chances of a strong display.

What is a solar storm warning today?

A solar storm warning today means the SWPC has issued a watch or alert for G1–G5 geomagnetic activity. Canadians should monitor power grid alerts and airline bulletins, especially if you rely on HF radio or GPS for work or travel in the North.
